Why quotes differ, and how to compare them

What actually moves the price of a new HVAC system

We do not publish prices, because every home is different and a price list would be wrong for yours. Here is exactly what moves the number, so you can compare two quotes properly.

The price of a new HVAC system is set by the size of the equipment, the efficiency rating, the condition and capacity of your ductwork, the electrical work needed, how accessible the install location is, and the brand and tier of equipment you choose. We calculate all of that for your home, then put the exact price in writing before anything is ordered.

For a repair, the price depends on the fault, the system and the parts involved, so we charge a diagnostic fee to test the system first. A failed capacitor and a failed compressor are both repairs, and quoting either before diagnosis would be guesswork.

What actually moves the number

Six things. When you are comparing quotes, check that each one has answered all six, because a quote that leaves one of them out usually leaves it out of the price too.

The six factors behind any HVAC quote
FactorWhy it changes the priceWhat it changes for you
System sizeThe tonnage sets the equipment and the labour. Too small and it never catches up, too big and it short-cycles and wears out early. We run a Manual J load calculation and size to your home, not to the square footage on the listing.
Efficiency ratingA higher rating costs more up front and saves more on the utility bill over the years. We show you the options side by side with the running cost, so you can judge the payback yourself.
DuctworkIf the existing ducts cannot carry the new system, no equipment fixes the problem. We check the runs before we quote, and we tell you if the ductwork is the limiting factor.
Electrical scopeA new circuit or a panel change is a real line on a quote, and two quotes can look identical until one includes it.We check the service and the panel before we commit to anything.
Access and install locationA roof unit, an attic unit and a ground pad are very different jobs to work on.We look at the access before we quote, so the price we give you is the price you get.
Brand and equipment tierDifferent manufacturers and efficiency tiers carry different price points. We install what we trust, and we tell you what each option costs you over its life, not just on day one.

Every quote we write itemises all six. Call us for a free phone consultation to guide your installation choices.

Repair or replace

The working-out our technicians use, and the maths behind it. This one uses your own repair costs, not ours.

How the arithmetic lands in practice
The systemWhat the arithmetic saysWhat usually happens
A few years old, the first repairThe total stays well under a replacementRepair it
Middle aged, the second or third repairIt lands close to a replacementCheck the warranty, then the parts
Old, and it has needed work every yearIt passes a replacementReplace it

The maths is simple. Multiply the age of the system by what you are spending on repairs each year, and compare that to what replacing it would cost. If the answer is well under, repairing is the better call.

The maths is simple. Take the age of the system, multiply it by what you are spending on repairs each year, and compare that to what replacing it would cost. If the answer is well under, repairing is the better call. It is a starting point, not a verdict, and we will give you an honest read either way.

Common questions

It depends on your home, so we will not put a number on it that would be wrong. The tonnage, the efficiency rating, the ductwork, the electrical work and the access all move it. We calculate those for your home, then put the exact price in writing before anything is ordered.

Because the cost depends entirely on the fault, and guessing would be dishonest. We charge a straightforward diagnostic fee to test and pinpoint the issue, then put the exact repair price in writing before any work starts. You approve everything before we begin.
