Seven reasons to hire an independent HVAC contractor in Stockton

Independence is not a sales pitch. It is a set of practical things a customer ends up with, and here is exactly what they are when you hire us.

Reasons to hire an independent hvac contractor are simple: a licensed company you can check, a price agreed in writing before the work starts, upfront written pricing, written guarantees, a real warranty, and people who are accountable for the result. RB HVAC has been an owner managed Stockton contractor since 2010, licensed under number 1094161.

Most people do not wake up wanting an independent contractor. They wake up wanting their air conditioner to work again, or their quote to make sense, and they end up choosing a company based on who answered the phone and whether the price seemed fair. That is a perfectly reasonable way to choose a plumber, and it is how most of us choose a doctor as well.

Independence, done properly, is not a badge. It is a set of practical arrangements that make the work easier to trust. Here are the seven we offer, described in terms of what you actually get.

One office, one workshop in Stockton, serving the Central Valley and Sacramento area. When the same company turns up for the estimate and the install, there is nobody else to pass the buck to.

What independent actually means here

RB HVAC Inc. is an owner managed company. Raman Bhanot owns and manages it, the office is at 4049 Cherokee Road in Stockton, and the licence number, 1094161, appears on everything we publish. We have been doing this since 2010, we are licensed and insured, and we have served more than 500 clients across the Central Valley.

We are also asked, fairly often, why we make such a point of it. The honest answer is that we do not know how other businesses pay their staff, and we are not going to guess at it. We have never read another contractor's employment arrangements, and neither should you, because the answer would not be worth much anyway. What is worth knowing is how your contractor works, and that you can ask them, in writing, and check whether their answers hold up.

So here is how we work, stated plainly, with nothing left for you to guess at.

Seven reasons to hire an independent hvac contractor

1. You talk to the person who owns the business

Raman Bhanot owns and manages RB HVAC, and the company answers the phones. There is no head office somewhere else and no gap between the person who quotes the job and the person whose name is on the invoice. For a repair that matters when something needs explaining. For a replacement it matters more, because the person who decided to replace the equipment is the person who has to live with that decision in the yard for the next fifteen years.

2. The price is agreed in writing before the work starts

We agree the price before any work begins, and it goes into a written quote with the scope attached. If the job turns out to be different from what we quoted once we have opened things up, we stop and talk to you before we carry on. Nobody should ever find out what a job costs from an invoice afterwards.

3. Transparent pricing, diagnostic clarity and installation guidance

We provide transparent diagnostics and upfront written pricing before any work starts. The in-home consultation is free. And if another company has quoted you a replacement, we will give you a second opinion, reviewing what they have included, running a load calculation and telling you plainly whether replacement is needed. If it is not needed, we will say so.

4. The licence number is on everything we publish

California law requires the HVAC contractor licence number to appear in all advertising, and ours appears on every page, every quote and every invoice. It is 1094161, and you can check it with the state licensing board. We are insured as well as licensed. A contractor who will not give you a licence number is telling you something, and it is not a good thing.

5. Two written guarantees instead of a handshake

We have an on-time promise: we arrive in the window you pick, or the service call is free. And we stand behind our workmanship, so if you are not happy with it we make it right. Both of those are commitments, not adjectives, and they are worth more than a promise of a discount on the next job.

6. You are dealing with a business in your own valley

We are based in Stockton and serve Stockton, Modesto, Sacramento, Roseville, Lodi, Tracy, Elk Grove, Manteca and Lathrop. A Central Valley summer is a specific set of conditions, and a house in Lathrop built in the nineties is not the same house as a nineteen twenties bungalow in Sacramento. Local knowledge is not a slogan. It is knowing which systems fail here and why.

7. The warranty is written down and it is real

On a replacement we carry 10 year manufacturer parts coverage plus 1 to 5 years of labour from us, and 5 years on an installation. That is the standard we work to and it belongs in the quote, so you can see what is covered and for how long before you sign anything. It also means the same company that installed the system is the company you call when you need it checked.

How to check any contractor in ten minutes

  1. Find the licence number. In California it has to be in their advertising, so if you cannot find it, ask.
  2. Ask for a written quote with the equipment named. A specific model and a tonnage, not a brand or a series.
  3. Ask how the size was decided. A load calculation with the working shown beats a rule of thumb every time.
  4. Ask what is not included. Ductwork, permits, the electrical, a new circuit. The gaps in a quote are where the extra money appears.
  5. Ask what the warranty covers and for how long. Parts and labour separately, with the length of each.
  6. Ask who you call when it goes wrong. Then check that it is the same company that did the work.

If you already have a quote, bring it to us. We will read it with you and point out what is in it and what is missing. We provide transparent diagnostics and upfront written pricing.

When to stop and call a licensed technician

Choosing a contractor is a research job. Some things are not, and those are worth listing.

  • Your system has stopped, is leaking water, is making a grinding noise or has a burning smell. That is a service call, and it needs a licensed technician today.
  • A gas appliance is involved. Combustion, venting and carbon monoxide checks need a licensed technician, not a weekend project.
  • You are being asked for payment in full before any work is done, with no written scope attached.
  • You are being asked to sign a replacement quote with no load calculation behind the size, and nobody will explain where the tonnage came from.
  • Any work that opens the refrigerant circuit, the electrical panel, a gas line or a wall. All of it needs a licensed trade, and in California the refrigerant work legally requires a certified technician.

Common questions

In our case it means the company is owner managed and based in Stockton, the person making decisions is the person you deal with, and the work is quoted in writing before it starts. We do not know how other businesses pay their staff, and we are not going to guess at it. What we can tell you is exactly how we work, and you can hold us to it.

Because a quote is a plan, and plans differ. Look for the equipment being specified, the size in tons, the refrigerant type, what the ductwork scope includes, who pulls the permit, the warranty terms and the total. Two quotes that look the same on page one can be very different on page three. We will look at another quote with you and review it with you and give an honest second opinion.

The licence number has to appear in all California HVAC advertising, so it should be easy to find without asking. You can also verify it with the state licensing board using that number. Ours is 1094161, we are based in Stockton, and we are insured as well as licensed. If a contractor will not give you a licence number, that tells you something.

The equipment by make and model, the size in tons and how it was calculated, the refrigerant type, the labour, the ductwork scope, the permit and inspection arrangements, the parts and labour warranty, and the total price with any additions already in it. If any of those are missing, ask for them before you sign, because a quote you can read is the only thing protecting you later.

Two things: the length of the parts coverage from the manufacturer, and the length of the labour coverage from the installer. The parts coverage is often the one that expires first. On a replacement we carry 10 year manufacturer parts coverage plus 1 to 5 years of labour from us, and 5 years on an installation. Ask for it in writing, not as a spoken assurance.

Ask for a second opinion on the quote you already have, and ask for it before you sign anything. We provide transparent diagnostics and upfront written pricing. We will look at the system, check what the other quote covers, run a load calculation and tell you plainly whether the replacement is needed. If it is not, we will say so.
